Buhei Mukai is an egocentric, hard-drinking, philandering film actor and director with a movie in the making and a marriage on the skids. What he thinks is just a persistent stomach ache turns out to be a massive cancer, as diagnosed by Dr. Ogata, the head surgeon at a famous Tokyo hospital, the former boyfriend of his wife. Buhei, as is customary in Japan, is not told that he has cancer and his wife and Dr. Ogata try their best to make him believe it is merely an ulcer. After a first operation, Buhei continues making his movie, which, coincidentally is about a couple dying of cancer ...
