Australia shortly after World War I. On a rundown sheep farm which was once the
pride of the district, preparations are under way for the return of Alexander and his new young bride. Following the death of his first wife, Alexander had emigrated to England to make a name for himself as a drama critic. He left his small daughter Sally, who has now grown up into a naive young woman, in the care of her sister. Everyone on the farm is impressed by Deborah' s beauty and hearing and by Alexander's sophistication.
