Tuur and Emma's golden wedding anniversary is a red-letter day for Emma. But it doesn't have the same meaning for Tuur. He thinks everyone's making much ado about nothing. Midway into the party, Tuur walks out. When Emma accidentally locks him out he decides to go to the only person he knows: his sister Josée who he hasn't seen for years. Josée is a lesbian who runs and performs in a cabaret together with her partner Odette. Gerda nearly has a fit when she finds out where he has spent the night. But despite her insistence Emma stubbornly refuses to go and bring her husband back. Tuur is equally stubborn; he obviously has no intention of coming home. Emma decides to make a complete break with her lifelong habits of passive acceptance of her condition. She takes things in hand, determined to go on with her life. Without Tuur who shares the idle superficial life of Josée and Odette. Fortunately Gerda has a brilliant idea that will reunite the couple: she dies! It's a chance for Emma and Tuur to get back together again, reunited thanks to and in the course of her funeral.
