In the late fifties, maverick American film-maker Lionel Rogosin travelled to South Africa to find out what apartheid was all about. Teaming up with a group of African writers – Can Themba, Bloke Modisane, Lewis Nkose – and filming illicitly, he produced the classic anti-apartheid docudrama "Come Back, Africa".
A young man leaves the country for the city. Zacharia is a worker without permission to work, and as such he is subject to arbitrary dismissal and sudden arrest – as well as the violence of township life. During the entire 40-year period of apartheid, no film carried quite the punch of Come Back, Africa". It is as shattering today as when it first appeared.
