Hugues Viane, a 40-year-old upper-class widower, lives in a stately mansion. The only thing that sustains him is the memory of his young deceased wife, Blanche. When his melancholy overwhelms him, he goes walking along the canals of Bruges, where everything reminds him of the past love of his life. On one of these lonely walks through the city, he meets a young ballerina, Jeanne, who is the exact double of Blanche. Jeanne feels attracted to this sensitive, mysterious man, who seems absent when she is talking to him, and falls in love with him. This plunges him into total confusion.
