The film is set against the backdrop of an accident that took place in Bhopal in 1984. During the accident, poisonous gas was released, killing over 16,000 people.
Verma is an aspiring poet whose new bride Tara is eager to start a family. In order to build up a nest egg, Verma puts his writing on hold and takes a job as an assistant supervisor at the Union Carbide Factory, which manufactures chemical pesticides and insecticides. His friend Basheer warns him that the plant is unsafe. He quit his job with Union Carbide, because he had no desire to put up with the dreadful working conditions any longer and he urges Verma to do the same. Verma decides to stay on, but while he is riding a train to Bhopal, he discovers that the tragedy Basheer predicted has come true, and he is put in a race against time to save Tara's life as thousands are dying all around him.
