A group of Asian women who take a break from their everyday routine and go on a day trip to Blackpool is the theme of Bhaji on the Beach. The film is set against the background of the famous Blackpool Golden Mile and its equally famous illuminations, where the women experience a day to remember; for some it is a day of carefree fun, for others a time of reflection and decision. Gurinder Chadha describes the film as "an ordinary day in ordinary people's lives, where a group of women are trying to stand aside from what is expected of them in their world".
