A brutally honest exploration of the messiness of family love tainted by addiction and depression. Irish visual artist Myrid Carten does not shy away from difficult conversations with her loved ones (especially her mother). On the contrary, these raw exchanges form the pounding heart of this original and gripping debut documentary.
Through childhood home videos, calls with the Missing Persons Unit, no-nonsenses exchanges with her uncles, and heartbreaking voicemails, Irish visual artist Myrid Carten pieces together a raw, fragmented portrait of her complex relationship with her mother, Nuala. Marked by years of depression and alcoholism, Nuala's long and winding journey reversed the roles of mother and daughter, placing an early burden of responsibility on Carten's shoulders. At the heart of this moving documentary is Nuala's childhood home - a character in its own right - where mother and daughter each hold on to their own, conflicting version of the past. By pressing the camera up against the walls of the battered house - yielding striking, unconventional angles - Carten powerfully captures both the dysfunction of a fractured family and their resilience, along with the (un)conditional love that binds them.
