In the opening film Coward by Lukas Dhont, young soldiers attempt to briefly escape the horrors of the trenches by staging musical performances. Meanwhile, the closing film Le Faux Soir by Michaël R. Roskam illustrates how imagination can serve as a powerful act of resistance. Yet, it need not always be about grand heroic deeds; often, it is the small, everyday stories that are truly worth telling. How does one cope with divorce, gender transition, or infidelity when war breaks out? How do you revive childhood memories when you grew up amidst conflict?
Éric Rohmer, too, understood better than anyone that small stories can be the largest of all. Throughout his colourful body of work, which will be screened as part of the Classics programme, his characters do not battle the outside world, but rather their own inner musings. Conversely, the Argentine film collective El Pampero Cine had nothing to lose during their home country's economic crisis; they began making films that, precisely because of those circumstances, possess a remarkable sense of freedom and unpredictability.
It is not just film that takes centre stage; (film) music is once again being thrust into the proverbial spotlight. During the Film Music Days, composers from around the world will gather in Ghent for talks, workshops, and masterclasses on the art of composition; guests include Guests of Honour Trevor Jones and Hildur Guðnadóttir, as well as creative partners Volker Bertelmann and Edward Berger. Meanwhile, Videodroom, in collaboration with VIERNULVIER, takes an experimental approach, presenting newly composed, live-performed soundtracks for cult classics.
Once again, we are delighted to welcome a wealth of Belgian and international talent. This includes directors Lance Hammer, Valentina Maurel, and Sompot Chidgasornpongse, actors Tom Courtenay, Iris Lebevda, Kevin Janssens en Anne Coesens, composers Alexandre Desplat, Daniel Pemberton, Stephen Schwartz, Paris Hurley, and others.
It promises to be a compelling edition, featuring films and musical works that move or surprise us—but above all, works that offer a ray of light in dark times. From discarded ammunition serving as theater scenery to printed words acting as bullets, art may well be the most powerful weapon of all.
