With The Long Road to the Director’s Chair, Norwegian filmmaker Vibeke Løkkeberg brings a once-lost chapter of film history into the present. At the very first International Women’s Film Seminar in Berlin (1973), she captured powerful conversations with female film professionals who, against all odds, fought to claim their place in a male-dominated industry. The footage disappeared for decades and was only recently rediscovered—a small miracle that the film can now finally be seen. Løkkeberg’s documentary is both an indictment and a tribute: a sharp, moving portrait of struggle and solidarity that, more than fifty years later, has lost none of its urgency. Following the screening on October 9, Vibeke Løkkeberg will join us in conversation about the film’s arduous journey, the wealth of archival material, the role of women in the film industry, and the long road to the director’s chair.
