Films are rarely made in solitude. Behind every scene lies a series of conversations, compromises and moments when one person sees something the other hasn’t yet noticed. Dag van het Filmberoep (day of the film profession, Friday 9 October 2026) is all about precisely those moments. Over the course of an afternoon, we’ll be letting filmmakers talk about how they work (together).
Edward Berger & Volker Bertelmann (2.00 pm – Kinepolis 8)
Director Edward Berger has been collaborating with composer Volker Bertelmann for many years: from All Quiet on the Western Front, which earned Bertelmann an Oscar and a WSAward for his score, to Conclave (WSAward 2025) and, more recently, Ballad of a Small Player. They discuss how a film finds its emotional range, when music carries a scene and when it is better left silent, and how, as a director and composer, you develop a language in which you no longer need to explain to each other what you mean.
Rebecca O’Brien — Engaged Cinema (15:45 pm – Kinepolis 4)
Rebecca O’Brien has been working as an independent producer for thirty-five years. Prior to that, she gained experience in the industry in a variety of roles: she was location manager on My Beautiful Laundrette (Stephen Frears, 1985) and production manager on several early Channel 4 films. As a producer, she has collaborated with Ken Loach to build one of the most consistent bodies of work in European cinema: Land and Freedom, The Wind That Shakes the Barley, I, Daniel Blake and The Old Oak. Two of these — The Wind That Shakes the Barley (2006) and I, Daniel Blake (2016) — won the Palme d’Or at Cannes. In an interview, she discusses what it takes to get socially engaged stories made and seen, and why those stories matter in dark times.
