Paper to Picture
At this years edition of Film Fest Gent, the page meets the screen in remarkable ways. The festival opens with Julian, based on the book by Fleur Pierets. Both works explore Julian and Fleur's desire to marry in the countries where it's legal, until their goal is abruptly interrupted by a cancer diagnosis.
Book adaptations are a common sight on the Ghent Film Fest program, but in 2025, we'll also be showing a number of films about the role of literature and poetry in society. Écrire la Vie is a documentary about how the work of author and Nobel Prize winner Annie Ernaux is taught in French classrooms. Books are also omnipresent in the children's programme, with a film about the ghost Laban, based on the Swedish book series. In How I Accidentally Wrote a Book, twelve-year-old Nina tries to write a book and seeks help from her neighbour. This Hungarian-Dutch production is, indeed, based on a book: a children's book by Dutch author Annet Huizing.
