This year at Film Fest Ghent, is family truly everything? With the tag Family First, we delve into stories about families that connect, suffocate, clash, or break. From distant parents to generations reinventing their identities: this selection shows how our roots shape us—and how we're sometimes forced to tear them apart.

In Father Mother Sister Brother, we see with a comic melancholy how adult children cope with the cold distance of their parents. Dreams (Sex Love) tenderly and humorously explores how different generations of women view sexuality and self-development. Sound of Falling threads the lives of four women together through a shared heritage and shows how place, time, and bloodline connect and define us. In Romería, the protagonist explores her deceased mother's past, accompanied by the stories from her old diary. DJ Ahmet doesn't delve into the past but reveals the differences between generations by considering the future. In this coming-of-age story, young dreams confront old traditions. And to what extent do you remain loyal to your family and children? Is their fault your fault? Do you continue to defend them, against your own morals? Growing Down explores this question without a clear answer.

Whether it's about passing on trauma, traditions, or love: these films reveal how family can be both a foundation and a dividing line.
