This film is set on an island with a large hotel where the celebrated dead are ferried and lodged so long as their earthly fame lasts. Once their notoriety fades, they are thrown into the sea to join the ordinary dead, condemned to bob up and down forever.
Peter O'Toole is excellent as a vain over-the-hill matinee movie idol who has been killed by a devil-may-care writer because the actor has cannibalized the writer's text for his own autobiography. After the writer dies in an accident, both arrive at the island hotel.
