"Daughters are a misfortune, boys are capable of taking care of themselves", Josefine is told by her mother day after day. Feeling unwanted after a new explosion of fury, Jossy decides to run away from her mother and take her life into her own hands. Her efforts to obtain food and shelter on the flight through the wintry landscape fail and so she dresses as a boy to increase her chances. When the master thief LasseMaya takes her on a as an apprentice, because of her girl-like wrists are ideally suited, Jossy' life begins to look up.
