A young Anglican clergyman, Anthony Campion, and his wife Estella, have freshly arrived from England to take up a new parish in the countryside west of Sydney. The Bishop asks them to stop en route at the house of artist Norman Lindsay, to try to persuade him to withdraw his painting The Crucified Venus (an etching which shows a voluptuous, naked woman cruci­fied) from a coming international exhibition. When a derailment occurs, delaying their onward journey, Anthony and Estella end up spending several days with the Lindsays and three young models...
