In the Danish drama Second Victims, a fatal error in judgment turns a pressured neurologist into a second victim and a target for blame. This impressive first feature film directed and written by actress Zinnini Elkington pumps your heart full of adrenaline and then rips it to pieces. Compelling performances humanize the shortcomings on both sides of the hospital bed.
In her understaffed hospital ward, neurologist Alex barely has time to breathe—let alone think. During what should be a routine examination, the mounting pressure hits a critical point. Guilt, blame, and moral dilemmas cut surgically deep into Alex's mother heart. The Danish drama Second Victims begins as a nerve-wracking pressure cooker in the vein of Boiling Point or Das Lehrerzimmer (FFG2023), before slowing down for the tragic aftermath. In her home country, actress Zinnini Elkington was widely praised for her deeply felt and assured feature debut as a both director and writer. Filmed on location at Herlev Hospital near Copenhagen with a predominantly female crew, Second Victims stars rising talent Özlem Saglanmak (Borgen) and powerhouse Trine Dyrholm (Poison, FFG2024). The film takes its title from the syndrome describing healthcare workers as "second victims".
