It is late 2001, and Argentina is sliding into chaos. As a result of the failure of President de la Rua's economic policies, the IMF intercedes. A state of siege is declared, and the people take to the street, demanding the government be removed from power. Unfortunately, it was already far too late - and this film offers up a story of betrayal as well as a bitter irony: how, after suffering through years of a vicious military dictatorship, the country's prosperity was squandered through the corruption and stupidity of a democratically elected government. A great filmmaker, Solanas is a patriot in the best sense, too saddened to be merely cynical.
Fuelled by a white-hot rage, yet reasoned and precise in its arguments, superbly shot and masterfully edited, this is political filmmaking at its most intelligent, impassioned and powerful.
