Germany, 1937. A nun delivers a baby for a young mother. Nothing is known about the father and the nun informs the chaplain it would be best not to declare the mother either. lnstead, the nun takes the infant girl, baptised Magdalena, to an elderly farmer Johann Aibele and his wife Alwing high in the Allgäu mountains. They have no children of their own and while Johan is hesitant, Alwina is very happy to be experiencing the belated joys of motherhood. Leni is a year old when the Aibeles get an unexpected visit fom the little girl's mother. Alwina is afraid that she will ask her child back, hut the pretty young woman merely leaves a camera with a request that they send her photos of the baby...
