The uneasy tension between sexuality and religion has been explored many times before, but rarely as subdued as in Hafsia Herzi's La Petite Dernière. This award-winning film adaptation of Fatima Daas's autofiction novel doesn't dwell on major conflicts, but offers an introspective coming-out story of a Muslim woman on the cusp of adulthood.
Fatima checks the street one last time before slipping into a bar, ready to meet her date. Hidden beneath a cap, she gives a false name, and even her French-Algerian identity is sacrificed. A harmless white lie: at seventeen, the young Muslim is still coming to terms with her sexuality. La petite dernière follows Fatima’s coming-out over the course of a year. Surrounded by a rowdy group of friends and a warm yet traditional family, the young lesbian searches for a way to reconcile her orientation with her faith and the expectations of those around her. It’s not an unfamiliar premise, but the adaptation of Fatima Daas’s autofiction novel stands out for its simplicity. Newcomer Nadia Melliti won Best Actress at Cannes for her delicate performance, while director Hafsia Herzi received the Queer Palm for this understated coming-of-age drama.
