In 1920s Stockholm, times are hard for the young Roland. His tobacconist father holds clandestine socialist meetings while his Russian Jewish mother trades illicitly in condoms. Roland suffers corporal punishment at the hands of his teacher, while his father and elder brother beat him at home, the latter in the name of boxing "practice". Roland responds by shutting himself away with his inventions, including a superb slingshot made from the rubbers his mother sells. Burlesque and tragic, the film's "period" setting does not stop it confronting contemporary problems such as bullying and racism.
