Budapest, 1952. Stalinist terror is in full swing as Kati (13) loses her mother. The shock is too great and her environment too hostile for Kati to accept her mother' s death. Instead, she creates a fantasy world where she and her mother discuss daily happenings and events. Life is difficult in this dark era, but even more so for Kati who alone must forge her own way. For her father is a victim of Stalinist purges and consequently works at a construction site far outside the city. It is up to Kati to assert herself in the collective apartment where she lives. But her family will not allow her to live there alone, so she is sent off to live with her elderly uncle and aunt...
