Fifteen year old Ah-Yuan and his girlfriend Ah-Yun travel to school by train each day from their country village in Taiwan. Ah-Yun lives alone with her mother while Ah-Yuan's large family is currently presided over by his grandfather while his father, injured in a mining accident, recuperates in hospital attended by his mother. When his father returns, Ah-Yuan announces that he wants to give up school to find work in Taipei. Ah-Yun comes to join him. Both are inseparable until Ah-Yuan is called to do his national service. When he returns (three years later) he finds out that Ah-Yun has married someone else...
