A free-wheeling, impressionistic portrait of three small children — two sisters and a brother, aged seven to nine — left to fend for themselves in Paris. The kids manage to shoplift food, sneak into the cinema, eat in cheap restaurants (one of the film’s most delightfully surreal scenes) before skipping out on the bill. All things considered, they manage to survive remarkably well, and these adventures are charged with a wild, almost savage sense of delight. Legendary filmmaker Chris Marker declared le Besco’s film ‘something entirely new in cinema’ and called it ‘the greatest debut since Godard’s “A bout de souffle”.
