James Miller is considered one of his generation's most observant witnesses to war. An award-winning journalist who had reported from Algeria, Bosnia, Lebanon, Iraq and Afghanistan, he was shot dead by an Israeli soldier in Rafah in May 2003. He had been working on a brace of documentaries covering the children caught in the crossfire of the conflict between Palestine and Israel. The film focuses on three Palestinian young people in Gaza. They talk of family, nationhood, the destruction of houses and the cult of martyrs. The film builds towards the footage of what happened the night of Miller's death, the final interviews recorded and the bullet that took his life as he walked through the dark, wearing a flak jacket imprinted with the letters TV and shining a torch on to a white flag.
The film was completed and shaped by his colleagues. It is a fitting tribute to someone who gave his life for the belief that films like "Death in Gaza" can make a difference to the way we understand the wider world.
