Compulsion

103' - 1959 - Crime, Drama, Biography - Dialogue: English
Director: Richard Fleischer Composer: Lionel Newman With: Orson Welles, Dean Stockwell, Diane Varsi
Compulsion is a hard-hitting version of the case of the two Chicago Raskolnikovs - Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb (in the film their names were changed in Judd Steiner and Artie Straus) thrill murder-case in 1920s Chicago. Both were brilliant students but miserably sloppy murderers. A good characterization, period decor, and well-edited courtrooms scenes highlight the picture. The three principals - Dean Stockwell, Bradford Dillman, and Orson Welles as their lawyer - were jointly given the best actor award at Cannes.
