The history of the groundbreaking Jazz label Blue Note, founded by the virtually unknown Jewish immigrants Alfred Lions and Frank Wolff, is portrayed in this outstanding documentary featuring interviews with legendary Jazz icons -- Herbie Hancock, Thelonius Monk, Art Blakely, Dexter Gordon and Ron Carter as well as conversations with Bertrand Tavernier, John Frankenheimer, Andre Previn, Carlos Santana and others...
The two German Jews emigrated from Nazi Germany to New York in the late thirties. In 1939 they started a business in New York and called it Blue Note, a jazz record company that was to become solitary in its field. Without money or connections and speaking little English, the two men began to record practically unknown musicians, following their own taste and judgement. Today this list of artists reads like the Who-is-Who of Jazz. (press kit)
