This is a surrealistic voyage into the mind of a woman married to a surgeon who dotes on her but whose odd quirks lead her to a life of prostitution in order to satisfy some deep-seated need. Fantasy and reality are blended seamlessly, and we are never certain if what we see is the actuality or another of her erotic daydreams. A bored, elegantly decadent housewife, Séverine learns that a bordello exists nearby. She is told this by Renée, a friend of her adoring husband Pierre. She is turned on as Renée tells her of the enslavement of the women at the brothel. She then shows up at the maison and offers her services from two until five every afternoon (hence the name "Belle de jour"). After one bad incident, she settles in and has several affairs.
