Armed with the apparent generosity of Robin Hood, the deductive powers of Sherlock Holmes and the charm of Don Juan, Arsène Lupin is an inveterate thief and collector. His story begins in Normandy in 1884, where, under the devout tutelage of his brigand father, a young Arsène steals a fetching necklace once worn by Marie-Antoinette. He hands it off to his father who disappears into the night, and in the morning Arsene’s father is found dead in the street. The film catches up with the adult Lupin years later, who is now an expert thief. When one of his thefts goes awry, he becomes an outlaw, and is taken in by his childhood sweetheart. The pair fall in love, but Lupin becomes bewitched by Josephine Balsamo, Countess of Cagliostro. He saves her from certain death at the hands of a group of Royalist plotters, and soon becomes entwined in a series of thefts and cold-blooded murders. His journey with the Countess sets him on a chase for the ultimate treasure, into battle with an all too familiar enemy, and on the path to revealed truths he could never have imagined.
