The film is a postmodernist vision of Franz Kafka’s unfinished novel “Missing”. A young Czech, Karel Rossmaon, arrives in early 20th century America, the country of immense successes and infinite failures. His uncle, Dwig Ellias Jakob, is the richest man in the United States. He welcomes his nephew as if he where his own son under the condition of Karel's absolute obedience and devotion to his company. These conditions are harsh indeed and very different to idyllic Europe. Karel does not stand the test. His uncle renounces him harshly and unexpectedly. America shows the young European its other face.
