The common thread throughout this annual seminar, organized in collaboration with the School of Arts, is French cinema. Surrealism, Nouvelle Vague, Besson's Cinema-du-look, poetic realism... What makes this French cinema and its film music so unique?

In collaboration with the School of Arts, Film Fest Gent organizes the annual film music seminar on Friday the 24th of October.
This year’s theme of the debate will be ‘French cinema’. Surrealism, Nouvelle Vague, Besson’s Cinema-du-look, poëtic realism… What is it that makes French cinema and it’s film music so unique? One thing is certain: there will be plenty to talk about.
In line with tradition the mediator will be Dr. Martine Huvenne. Dr. Huvenne is a professor at the School Of Arts and LUCA and wants to emphasize the importance of film and music as an artistic component, focussing on the collaboration between the composer, director and sound designer.
The first guest will be Thierry Jousse, he was for many years an editor for respectable French publications like, ‘Cahiers du cinéma’ and ‘Les Inrockuptibles’. He currently hosts his own radio show, ‘Cinéma Song’, on the channel ‘France Musique’, where he discusses the different aspects of film music. After the debate there will be a lunch break. It will be the ideal moment to meet and discuss with other film lovers.
After the break, Bruno Coulais will have the floor. The French composer wrote the music for such films as: ‘Microcosmos: Le Peuple de l’herbe’, ‘Coraline’, ‘Les Choristes’ and ‘Mon pire chauchemar’. During his career he worked closely with director and scriptwriter Benoît Jacquot, known for the film ‘Les Adieux à la reine’.
Finally we will welcome award winning composer, Philippe Sarde. Sarde is the go-to composer for directors like Bertrand Tavernier, André Téchiné and Claude Sautet. He became famous for his scores of the film ‘Tess’ by Roman Polanski and ‘Les Choses de la vie’, directed by Paul Sautet. With over 200 music pieces for features, short films and mini-series, he has had an impressive oeuvre to his name.
