A new wave of Lithuanian cinema is gaining international acclaim. FFG presents a short film retrospective of Vytautas Katkus, one of the most intriguing voices of his generation. His films, moving between intimacy and absurdity, reveal the roots of this vibrant new movement.
A fresh wind is blowing through Baltic cinema. In recent years, a new wave of Lithuanian filmmakers has been winning awards at international festivals, with names like Marija Kavtaradze (Slow, FFG2024) and SaulÄ— BliuvaitÄ— (Toxic, FFG2024). Their films - often marked by intimacy, silences, and a kind of existential lightness - have firmly placed Lithuania on the arthouse map. In this context, FFG presents a short film retrospective of their regular cinematographer (and former classmate) Vytautas Katkus. Alongside his work as a director of photography, Katkus has carved out his own path as a filmmaker, creating poetic and incisive shorts that have since gained international recognition. His eye for detail and quiet observation recalls early Jarmusch or Wenders, though always filtered through a distinctly Baltic sensibility. This selection shows how small sketches have blossomed into the fertile ground for a vibrant new wave of cinema.
