Lecture on the craft of scoring a film by Fred Karlin

An illustrated lecture on the craft and techniques of film scoring by one of the greatest authorities in the area. Fred Karlin has scored over 30 motion pictures and more than 100 television movies and miniseries. He received an Academy Award for Best Song in 1971 For All We Know from Lovers and Other Strangers and an Emmy for Best Score in 1973, The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman. He has a total of 4 Academy Award nominations and 11 Emmy nominations. Fred Karlin is co-author with Rayburn Wright of On the Track: A Guide to Contemporary Film Scoring (1990). His second book, Listening to Movies: The Film Lover's Guide to Film Music, was released at the end of 1993.

Fred Karlin has instructed the ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers) / Fred Karlin Film Workshops for six years. The workshop is designed for the benefit of young composers from all over the world who are interested in developing their film-scoring skills and improving their understanding of film composition. He also teaches at the University of Southern California and the University of California Santa Barbara. Fred Karlin is a trustee of the Society for the Preservation of Film Music.

Panel discussion

A panel discussion on scoring a film and the application of music in film with Fred Karlin and guest film directors. Further to the lecture in the morning, Fred Karlin will talk with a number of film directors about how they work with music in their film and about how the dialogue between filmmakers and composers can be stimulated. The participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and join the discussions.
