Rupert Murdoch laid the foundations for his media empire in Australia, but the major growth came in the United Kingdom with the acquisition of The Sun in 1969. He turned it into a tabloid, and together with editor Larry Lamb he focused on sensation and sex — such as the Page 3 girl, a full-page photo of a young topless woman. It's all there — along with an infamous kidnapping that caused an uproar in England at the time — in Danny Boyle's Ink (Trainspotting, 1996), with a star cast: Guy Pearce as Murdoch, Jack O'Connell as Lamb, and Claire Foy as a fictional journalist at The Sun. Ink, the opening film of the Venice Film Festival, is a favourite for the Oscars. In the words of Time critic Stephanie Zacharek: "Ink works both as a fictionalised snapshot of a lost world and as a forensic examination of what happens when you give people what they want, rather than what they don't know they want."
