French director Sébastien Lifshitz returns to Film Fest Gent with a portrait of 82-year-old Claude Loir, a former porn actor and early figure in the gay liberation movement. Drawing on Loir’s autobiography, the documentary traces a life shaped by his determination to embrace pleasure and freedom in France of the late 1960s and early 1970s.
French director Sébastien Lifshitz is a regular guest at Film Fest Gent. Six years after winning the Grand Prix for Best Film for Petite fille, he presents a new documentary this year, Un jeune homme de bonne famille. In it, he portrays 82-year-old Claude Loir, a former porn actor and, more than half a century ago, a figurehead of gay liberation. Lifshitz got to know Loir three years ago when he published his autobiography Confessions païennes (Pagan Confessions). In Un jeune homme de bonne famille, Lifshitz offers a faithful account of the man's life. Loir's drive to embrace life to the fullest has always shaped his choices and forms the thread running through his existence – however difficult that was in the late '60s and early '70s, in a France torn between extreme conservatism (the shadow of Charles de Gaulle) and the sexual liberation of May '68.
