We proudly announce the full programme of the 53rd edition of Film Fest Gent. From 7 to 18 October, the city of Ghent will once again serve as the backdrop for more than 100 feature films, 40 short films, 2 VR projects, and 23 documentaries from 49 different countries. Film Fest Gent is set to welcome a host of film and music talent to the red carpet and beyond, from promising young artists to multi-award winners. Numerous film (music) professionals from all over the world will come together in Ghent for inspiring talks, networking events, masterclasses, and a meet & greet with the nominated composers for the World Soundtrack Awards.

Met trots kondigen we het volledige programma aan van de 53ste editie van Film Fest Gent. Van 7 tot 18 oktober wordt de stad Gent het decor voor meer dan 100 langspeelfilms, 40 kortfilms, 2 VR-projecten en 23 documentaires uit 49 verschillende landen. Film Fest Gent mag heel wat film- en muziektalent verwelkomen op de rode loper en daarbuiten, van veelbelovend jong talent tot meervoudige prijswinnaars. Ook film(muziek)professionals van over de hele wereld verzamelen in Gent voor inspirerende talks, netwerkevenementen, masterclasses en een meet & greet met de genomineerde componisten voor de World Soundtrack Awards.

Creative Partners & Producer's Talks

Fri 9 Oct - Kinepolis Gent

EN - On Dag van het Filmberoep (Film Industry Day), on Friday 9 October, we highlight creative collaborations. Composer Volker Bertelmann and director Edward Berger (Conclave, All Quiet on the Western Front) have been collaborating for years. They offer us unique insight into the creative process and artistic vision behind some of the key works in their filmography, from initial concept to final cut, as well as the highlights of their joint career. Rebecca O'Brien, an independent film producer with 35 years of experience, discusses her award-winning collaborations with director Ken Loach (The Wind That Shakes the Barley, I, Daniel Blake).

NL - Tijdens Dag van het Filmberoep op vrijdag 9 oktober zetten we creatieve samenwerkingen in de kijker. Componist Volker Bertelmann en regisseur Edward Berger (Conclave, All Quiet on the Western Front) werken al jaren samen en geven ons een uniek inzicht in het werkproces en de artistieke visie achter enkele van de belangrijkste werken uit hun oeuvre, van eerste idee tot uiteindelijke montage, en de hoogtepunten van hun gezamenlijke carrière. Rebecca O'Brien, al 35 jaar onafhankelijk filmproducent, vertelt over haar bekroonde samenwerkingen met regisseur Ken Loach (The Wind That Shakes the Barley, I, Daniel Blake).

From Script to Sound: Crafting the Soundtrack to Lukas Dhont's 'Coward'

Thurs 8 Oct - Kinepolis Gent

Director Lukas Dhont, composer Valentin Hadjadj and music supervisor Pierre-Marie Dru sit together to talk about their creative collaboration on the soundtrack for Coward. They explore their role within the musical universe of the film and their previous collaborations. The movie’s soundtrack, which is unique in its combination of an original score, composed by Hadjadj, with historical archival music: the songs performed by the actors were actually written and performed by soldiers in the trenches, and were dug up from the archives, coordinated by Dru.

Regisseur Lukas Dhont, componist Valentin Hadjadj en muziekcoördinator Pierre-Marie Dru vertellen over hun creatieve samenwerking aan de soundtrack van Coward, hun rol binnen de muzikale wereld van de film en hun eerdere samenwerkingen. De soundtrack van de film is uniek door de combinatie van een originele score, gecomponeerd door Hadjadj, met muziek uit historische archieven: de nummers die door de acteurs worden gezongen, zijn daadwerkelijk geschreven en uitgevoerd door soldaten in de loopgraven en werden gevonden in archieven. Dit deel viel onder toezicht van Dru.

7 - 18 Oct - Film Fest Café

EN - Throughout the festival, you can enjoy a fascinating 'Talkie' almost every day for free at the Film Fest Café, where directors and other (film) talent discuss the making of their films, creative collaborations, or the historical research that went into the film. The Talkies are held in Dutch unless specified otherwise.

NL - Tijdens het festival kan je zo goed als elke dag gratis genieten van een boeiende Talkie in het Film Fest Café, waarin regisseurs en ander (film)talent in gesprek gaan over de making off van hun film, creatieve samenwerking of historisch onderzoek dat de film voorafging. De Talkies zijn in het Nederlands tenzij anders aangegeven.

8 - 10 Oct - Kinepolis Gent

EN - Film and film music professional are invited to join talks and masterclasses by acclaimed film composers and WSA Guests of Honour Hildur Guðnadóttir and Trevor Jones, and to participate in workshops by WSA nominated composers Jeff Russo, Simon Franglen, Paris Hurley and Andrew Arcadi.

NL - El Pampero Cine heeft altijd conventionele ideeën uitgedaagd over hoe films gemaakt worden en wie ze mag maken. In deze Director's Talk blikken Mariano Llinás en Agustín Mendilaharzu terug op de collectieve werkwijzen, artistieke invloeden en alternatieve productiemodellen die hun werk hebben gevormd.

NL - Ontdek het werk van filmmaker Barbara Hammer in een gesprek met Nicole Fernández Ferrer. Zij biedt een unieke blik op Hammers radicale, persoonlijke en invloedrijke oeuvre. Deze talk vindt aansluitend plaats bij 'Barbara Hammer: A Short Film Retrospective', waarin 5 kortfims van Hammer vertoond worden.

EN - Discover the work of pioneering filmmaker Barbara Hammer in conversation with Nicole Fernández Ferrer. She offers a unique perspective on Hammer’s radical, intimate and influential body of work. This talk will take place immediately after ‘Barbara Hammer: A Short Film Retrospective’, in which five of Hammer’s short films will be screened.
