Journalist Jan Brokken (Joes Brauers) gets the chance to interview world-famous pianist Youri Egorov (Levan Gelbakhiani). Having fled the Soviet Union, Youri throws himself wholeheartedly into his music and his newly gained freedom in 1980s Amsterdam. Jan is his opposite: thoughtful and reserved, harbouring a writer's dream he doesn't dare pursue. Yet the two recognise something in each other, and their encounter grows into a close friendship. Sander Burger (De veroordeling) adapts Jan Brokken's autobiographical In het huis van de dichter into a warm portrait of two artists at a turning point in their lives. Brauers and Gelbakhiani lend their friendship both lightness and intimacy. Youri is an ode to an encounter that changes the course of two lives, but also to art as a space for freedom — and to the courage it takes to choose that life.
