Shortly before the 1973 Chilean coup, CIA agents Chris (John Malkovich) and Lee (Sam Rockwell) are sent to Easter Island by their boss for a mandatory vacation. Amid the mysterious moai and paradisiacal landscapes, their getaway descends into paranoia and a confrontation with their past. Following Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (FFG2017) and The Banshees of Inisherin (FFG2022), Martin McDonagh continues to build on his trademark style of razor-sharp dialogue, dark humour and clashing characters. But beneath the absurdity lies a more serious story: one about guilt, accountability and the question of how to come to terms with yourself and a dark national history. As the ageing Chris, John Malkovich gives a performance that is at once dryly comic and surprisingly vulnerable - rarely has he been so moving.
