A young woman born into humble circumstances dreams of a better life, but is confronted with the sacrifices involved in achieving that ambition. The premise of L’Âge d'or appears deceptively conventional, but make no mistake: in his feature debut, Bérenger Thouin effortlessly turns the typical ‘zero to hero’ narrative on its head. The Franco-Italian director spent over ten years working on this remarkable fictional epic, which chronicles the aspirations of Jeanne Lavaur, the daughter of a butcher. She guides us through the great social upheavals of the twentieth century, driven by an insatiable hunger for power and a dubious moral compass. Thouin presents Jeanne’s life story in beautiful vignettes, composed of a mix of archive footage and new material. The result is a complex portrait, worthy of a premiere in the Classics section at Cannes.
