Party animal Peter grew up in New York’s hedonistic nightlife, but his best years are behind him. The party seems to be well and truly over when the single thirty-something suddenly receives a visit from ten-year-old Arlo, a son he didn’t even know existed. Or is this actually a chance to finally grow up? Club Kid openly flirts with the familiar formula of American comedy-dramas, only to cleverly surprise the viewer in the end. That is the charm and talent of Jordan Firstman, who wrote the screenplay, takes on the lead role and delivers his first feature film as director. The versatile comedian made a name for himself with sitcoms, web series and even Instagram sketches during lockdown, often inspired by his experiences as a gay man and peppered with cheeky humour. No wonder that, following the premiere in Cannes, film distributors were fighting amongst themselves for this authentic-feeling queer comedy with a big heart.
