In 1858, Winifred Notty arrives at Ensor House as governess to two precocious children. Her polished manners hide a gruesome appetite and a trail of dead bodies. Maika Monroe plays her with wicked delight, while the movie mixes gore, black comedy and gothic unease. The result is a playful horror flick where the Victorian facade cracks before us.

It is 1858 in Victorian England, an era in which a dark truth often lurks behind a respectable façade. The eccentric Winifred Notty arrives at Ensor House, a remote estate where she becomes governess to the two precocious children of the household. She behaves impeccably, but she also displays some disturbing impulses. Early in the film, she finds an ear in her bedroom, which she devours with great relish. In voice-over, she reveals that she has left a trail of dead bodies in her wake as a governess. Her home village is notorious for its many dead babies. In short, as a viewer you soon know exactly what you're dealing with. Scream queen Maika Monroe (It Follows, Longlegs) portrays her with devilish relish. The (dark) humour is at least as important in Victorian Psycho as the horror, though director Zachary Wigon (Sanctuary) also delivers a fair dose of gore.

For over a decade, the Ghent-based film collective Kuru has been sharing its love for horror and cult cinema through special screenings and themed events. Every screening is unique and delightfully offbeat. At the premiere of Victorian Psycho on October 14th, Kuru will get the audience in the mood with a group session of ‘kuruoke’ – their twisted take on karaoke.
