The Last Day

The Last Day is a highly loose adaptation of Virginia Woolf's Mrs. Dalloway. A number of the novel's basic hallmarks are present – a day devoted to errands, the discontented housewife, the unstable stranger, flashes of the past – but the story has been relocated to present-day America on the Fourth of July. The lives of two women are intertwined. Not that they know each other, but their feelings and experiences run strikingly parallel. Julia (Oscar winner Alicia Vikander) is a writer who hasn't put a word on paper in a decade. She's trapped in a none toonhappy marriage and experiences motherhood as a burden. Taylor, meanwhile, tries to keep herself together amid all her anxieties, skipping a planned visit to a psychiatrist. Visual artist Rachel Rose makes her debut with this visually fascinating drama, remarkably paced to the rhythm of a fire engine siren.
