After the success of Saint Frances and Ghostlight, co-directors Kelly O’Sullivan and Alex Thompson once again display their mastery in depicting loss, grief and a (renewed) search for identity in their third co-production Mouse. This coming-of-age drama is a modest and wholesome gem, following Minnie who needs to find her way in life without her best friend.
They are as different as night and day, the 17-year-old teenage girls Callie and Minnie. The former is spending her final days at secondary school in Arkansas, dreaming of a Broadway career, whilst being admired and envied by her many friends. The latter is a shy maths whizz who feels safe in the shadow of her charismatic best friend. The two are inseparable, until a tragic car accident brings their friendship to an abrupt end. Minnie feels utterly lost now that she must face the growing pains of adolescence alone. The only ally she seems to find in her boundless grief is Callie’s mother, Helen. From their shared sorrow emerges a tender yet complex dynamic, which complicates Minnie’s search for her own identity. Mouse manages to strike a balance between humour and intense grief, though you’ll certainly need plenty of tissues whilst watching this deeply human drama.
