Inspired by true events, the moral drama Fjord pits the parenting values of two conservative parents (Renate Reinsve and Sebastian Stan) against the so-called open-mindedness of their Norwegian fellow villagers. Romanian filmmaker Cristian Mungiu (4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days) masters treading on glacial ice and warmed up the jury at Cannes for a second Golden Palm.
Fjord reunites the versatile actors Renate Reinsve (The Worst Person in the World, FFG2021) and Sebastian Stan (The Apprentice, FFG2024), who previously starred together in A Different Man (FFG2024). The pair play a conservative couple who move with their children from Romania to the woman’s remote, progressive hometown in Norway. Instead of a warm welcome, their relationship with the villagers soon plummets below freezing. Director Cristian Mungiu is regarded as one of the leading figures of the Romanian New Wave and is a regular at Film Fest Gent, having previously screened films such as Bacalaureat (FFG2016). Fjord, inspired by a true-life drama, earned him his second Palme d’Or following 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days (2007), alongside no fewer than four other awards at Cannes. Mungiu once again delivers morally complex cinema exploring conflicting values that gives pause for thought. Chilling and powerfully executed.
