Film magazine Movie Maker listed Film Fest Ghent on their 2020 list of 50 Film Festivals Worth the Entry Fee. This list is directed at film producers and directors in the industry and helps them find the right film festivals that can be a tipping point in their career.

Since the start in 1974, Film Fest Ghent has grown to be one of the most prominent European film-related events, with yearly over a hundred feature films, 30 short films and since 2001 the prestigious World Soundtrack Awards. Aside from the 130.000 visitors that attend the various events in Ghent every year in October, the film festival is also an interesting locus for directors, composers, producers, distributors, and other stakeholders in the film industry. With various, generous prizes (e.g. Grand Prix for the Best Film, George Delerue Award for best application of Music or Sound Design, World Soundtrack Award for Composer of the Year, …) awarded by international juries and numerous events, press conferences, seminars, Q&A’s, Composers Labs and Industry Days, Film Fest Ghent provides the total package of festivities. This has not escaped the eye of film magazine ‘Movie Maker’.

Every year, they compose a top 50 list of ‘Film Festivals Worth the Entry Fee’. Based on a great amount of variables, they explore which festivals can provide the best possible return for creative film directors and producers who have invested time, money and effort in their films. While one filmmaker might be looking for a film festival that is attended by a large number of professional peers and decision-makers from the industry, another filmmaker might be reaching for as many engaged cinephiles as possible. For them, Movie Maker selects 50 festivals each year that can be a tipping point in their career and are thus worthy of paying the Entry Fee for submission. This year, Film Fest Ghent is amongst the happy few.

Film Fest Gent

The magazine describes our attention for film music and composition, especially during the World Soundtrack Awards, with guests such as Hans Zimmer, Alexandre Desplat, Carter Burwell, Gustavo Santaolalla and many more, as our biggest hallmark. Furthermore, the unique combination of press, public and industry (e.g. distributors of Sony and Disney) that are present, is emphasized in the list. As such, Film Fest Ghent is in the company of a large amount of American as well as some European film festivals suchlike Doclisboa International Film Festival (Lisbon, Portugal), International Film Festival of the Art of Cinematography Camerimage (Toruń, Poland), Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival (Tallinn, Estonia) and Warsaw International Film Festival (Warsaw, Poland).
