Film Fest Gent 2018 announces Belgian slate including 6 world premieres

At the 45th Film Fest Gent, Belgian cinema will be present as ever. Earlier it was announced that not only the opening night ('Girl' by Lukas Dhont), but also the closing film ('Beautiful Boy' by Felix van Groeningen) will come from a Belgian director. The festival now presents the 10 titles by or with Belgian talent, including no less than 6 world premieres.

Film Fest Gent to close 45th edition with 'Beautiful Boy' by Felix van Groeningen

The film 'Beautiful Boy' by Felix van Groeningen with Timothée Chalamet and Steve Carell will be the closing film of the 45th edition of Film Fest Gent. The film will have its Belgian premiere on October 19th at the festival, preceded by the presentation of the official festival awards, in the presence of the international festival jury and director Felix van Groeningen. Film Fest Gent announces recording of 'Carter Burwell: Music for Film' album

In line with tradition, a selection of the World Soundtrack Award's main guest's music will be recorded and released for the annual 'Music for Film' album. Some of Carter Burwell's most captivating scores will be recorded on August 20-22 in Flagey's legendary Studio 4, performed by Brussels Philharmonic and conducted by Dirk Brossé. The live recording will include exclusive and unpublished tracks from  'The Spanish Prisoner' and 'Olive Kitteridge'. It will be the first compilation album of Burwell's film scores ever released, licensed by Silva Screen Records and recorded, mixed & mastered by MotorMusic.

Film Fest Gent and Vooruit launch new festival VIDEODROOM: a 10-day unique cross-over universe, balancing between film and music

On 10 October, Vooruit and Film Fest Gent will launch the first edition of VIDEODROOM. During the upcoming Film Fest Gent (9-19 Oct 2018) and at cultural arts centre Vooruit, artists and audiences will explore a new universe at the intersection between music, films and visuals. Film scores will be reworked and well-known films and their scores will be deconstructed. Ex-Sonic Youth frontman Thurston Moore opens the festival with his new score for four short films by experimental filmmaker Maya Deren.

French composer Philippe Sarde receives Lifetime Achievement Award at 18th World Soundtrack Awards

Within the framework of the upcoming World Soundtrack Awards Gala, Film Fest Gent will honour Philippe Sarde's impressive career with a Lifetime Achievement Award followed by a tribute to Sarde's film music. The French composer is known for an immense variety and richness in his scores, ranging from impressive symphonic work to pure jazz. Sarde has worked with several world-famous directors such as Claude Sautet, Bertrand Tavernier, Yves Boisset, André Téchiné, Roman Polanski, Jean-Jacques Annaud, Marco Ferreri, Jacques Doillon and even Robert Bresson.

The very first title of the 45th Film Fest Gent has been announced. The series 'Over Water' by Paul Baeten Gronda, Tom Lenaerts & Norman Bates takes place in the renowned city and the port of Antwerp. The festival will screen the first two episodes in the section 'Serial Madness'.

Young Critics: Call Me By Your Name by Susana Bessa

Photogénie and Film Fest Gent proudly present the 4th Young Critics Workshop (October 12 – 20, 2017), open to aspiring film critics (aged 18-26) from Belgium and abroad, offering them the opportunity to cover the 44th edition. The participants cover the festival by writing both short reviews and an in-depth piece. The participants are guided by film critic Nick Pinkerton (Film Comment, Sight & Sound, Reverse Shot, …) and the Photogénie team. Today: Susana Bessa writes about Call Me By Your Name.

44th edition of Film Fest Gent has taken off

Yesterday night, the 44th edition of Film Fest Gent kicked off with the Belgian premiere of Philippe Van Leeuw’s award-winning drama ‘Insyriated’, attended by the director and actress Juliette Navis. During the opening night, a Joseph Plateau Honorary Award was also given to Pierre Drouot, the CEO of the Flanders Audiovisual Fund (VAF).

Film Fest Gent competition lineup announced

After announcing the nominees of the World Soundtrack Awards earlier this month, the 44th Film Gest Gent now reveals its lineup of the official competition. The selection consists of twelve films, including world premieres of 'The Butcher, The Whore & the One-Eyed Man' by János Szász and first feature 'Zagros' by Sahim Omar Kalifa. Followed by various Benelux premieres of international festival favorites such as 'Call me by your Name', 'A Ciambra', The Killing of a Sacred Deer' & 'Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri'.

World Soundtrack Awards celebrates 100 years of jazz with Terence Blanchard as central guest and David Shire as recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award

This year the World Soundtrack Awards Gala, held on Wednesday October 18th and the Symphonic Jazz Concert, held on Thursday October 19th, both powered by Film Fest Gent, will focus on the incredible influence of jazz music on the art of film scoring from the past and the present. Brussels Philharmonic conducted by Dirk Brossé will perform compelling classical and contemporary jazz scores, accompanied by film clips on the big screen.

'A Quiet Passion' by Terence Davies and Home' by Fien Troch win at the 43rd Film Fest Gent internatinal competition

On Friday 21 October, the international jury of Film Fest Gent, led by jury president Jeremy Thomas, announced the winners of the different competitions. 'A Quiet Passion' by Terence Davies won the Grand Prix for Best Film. The Georges Delerue Award for Best Music went to Johnny Jewel for his music for 'Home' by Fien Troch. Jeremy Thomas received the Lifetime Achievement Award for his entire career.

This year’s international jury consisted of producer and president Jeremy Thomas, director Tran Anh Hung, author Jonathan Coe and actresses Maaike Neuville, Lina El Arabi and India Hair.
