Where students and professionals meet

As an annual tradition, Film Fest Gent, KASK - School of Arts Gent and the World Soundtrack Awards coordinate the Film Music & Sound Seminar, an event organised for students in film, (film) music and sound design to learn and discuss about the artistic collaboration between filmmaker, composer and/or sound designer.

During one day, Martine Huvenne (KASK & Conservatorium, Ghent) invites different professionals to alk about their experiences and thoughts on scoring for motion pictures. The seminar is always illustrated with several film clips.
After the Seminar, a matchmaking session between students of the 3rd bachelor and master in film, (film) music and sound design takes place.

In 2018, the Film Music & Sound Seminar takes place on Tuesday 16 October 2018, with two impressive central guests: world-renowned composer Carter Burwell and Oscar-winning sound designer Skip Lievsay (Gravity), both core contributors to the Coen Brothers movies.
This year Burwell received an Oscar nomination for Three Bilboards outside Ebbing, Missouri.

During a lecture for School of Sound in 2001, Burwell revealed the importance of film music: ‘it carries an informative value and shows unspoken connections, but more importantly, it creates an emotional effect in the audience. Music opens up a feeling that dominates the whole atmosphere of the film.’

The seminar will be moderated by dr. Martine Huvenne (School of Arts Ghent and coordinator of EPAS) and is entirely English spoken.

There is also the possibility of reserving special combi tickets both the Film Music Seminar and the WSAwards Industry Day (of which the programme will follow soon) for €25*/€35.
