As a natural consequence of the musical DNA of the organisation, every year we organise concerts in which film music comes to the foreground. Aside from the World Soundtrack Awards, two years ago a Hollywood Nightmares concert took place with a symphonic selection of the best scores for horror films. Due to the corona crisis, no extra concert was held in 2020. However, the 20th World Soundtrack Awards were held as an online edition. The 21st edition of the World Soundtrack Awards will be held on 23 October 2021. But before the WSAcademy hands out its awards, there is the annual theme concert on 21 October 2021.

Since 1985, the impact of music on film has been an important component of the festival programme. It enables us to step outside the realm of traditional film screening and to seek for the cross-pollination between image and music through film music concerts. This crops up during the Gala & Concert of the World Soundtrack Awards and yearly in a thematic film music concert that revolves around the work of one composer, country of subject. Thereby, topicality is not shunned.

In recent years, renowned film composers such as Ennio Morricone, Georges Delerue, Jean-Claude Petit, Nicola Piovani, Peer Raben, Stanley Myers, Carl Davis, Bruce Broughton and Michael Nyman came to Ghent to present their work. Look back at all the recent film music concerts since 1985 in the overview below.

In 2015 we focused, analogous to that year’s subject, on ‘Great British Film Music’. In 2016, original scores written for television series were highlighted in ‘Scoring for Television’. In 2017 we celebrated the 100th birthday of jazz with the ‘Symphonic Jazz in Film’ concert. In 2018, we traveled to outer space with ‘'2001 and Beyond: A Symphonic Odyssey', and in the last edition, we gave attention to the horror film with ‘Hollywood Nightmares: Scary Symphonic Scores’.
