To Neus Ballus, to be a responsible tourist one must first be a conscientious adult. In this coming-of-age drama, the Catalonian director has chosen a seventeen-year-old's point of view. Marta arrives in Senegal for an all-in vacation with her father and younger brother. Before long she is bored to tears by the so-called authentic visits and endless games of bingo. She wishes she could party, drink and hang out with her peers. Her dreams seem to come true when a local hotel maid introduces her to the 'staff only' areas and shows her the local, non-touristic scene. Hidden in a coming-of-age cover, Ballus' 'Staff Only' sheds some light on the blind eye the tourism business catered to white tourists in Africa turns to the continent's reality.
