In the presence of: Raoul Servais
"SERVAIS", the documentary, tells the story of the living film legend Raoul Servais on his way to his date with history. At the end of June 2018, Mu.ZEE, the fine arts museum in Ostend, opened two permanent galleries dedicated to the work of Servais, who was 90. His work will thus forever be flanked by that of two other illustrious Belgian artists, namely James Ensor and Leon Spilliaert. The documentary narrates the three years that led up to this milestone in Servais's career. It follows the daily life of the internationally-acclaimed filmmaker and animator from October 2015 onwards, showing how he continues to push back his own boundaries day after day with his infectious energy. He exhibits, publishes and inspires, continuously and regularly. We see a tireless driving force, who inspires many young people to cross their own boundaries, with his ideas and work. For three years, the film follows him in his energetic footsteps, on the way to the museum. This intimate and honest portrait details Servais's new projects, examines his sources of inspiration, his ingenious dreams and brilliant inventiveness, his doubts and failures. The close relationship with his home town, which is just a stone's throw from Ostend, is also always palpable. A series of activities and events walks us through the most important films in his long career. As such, this documentary becomes a long journey to the intriguing places that have shaped the film director's life and work.
